Tree of Life

Contemporary Mixed Media Artwork on Reclaimed Grimsby Dock Hatch

Kayza Gillbanks

Tree of Life is a contemporary mixed media artwork created on an original reclaimed wooden hatch sourced from the historic docks of Grimsby Docks. Rich with texture, history and industrial character, the reclaimed timber carries the marks, weathering and imperfections of its former working life, transforming the piece into both artwork and artefact.

At the centre of the composition stands a hand painted Tree of Life, symbolising growth, connection, resilience and renewal. Hundreds of individually applied mirrored glass fragments catch and reflect surrounding light, creating movement and subtle flashes of colour across the surface as the viewer moves around the piece.

The contrast between the raw dock wood and the delicate reflective elements creates a balance between industry and nature, permanence and fragility. Soft turquoise tones at the base of the work introduce a contemporary vibrancy against the warm reclaimed timber, while the layered mirrored detailing gives the artwork a sculptural, light reactive quality.

Each knot, grain mark and weathered imperfection within the reclaimed hatch remains visible, preserving the industrial history of the material while allowing the artwork to evolve into something contemporary, uplifting and visually immersive.

Blending reclaimed materials, craftsmanship and symbolic imagery, Tree of Life functions as both statement wall art and a one of a kind contemporary object with strong regional heritage and modern design appeal.
