The Note

Sean Boylam – Lincolnshire based craftsman 

The Note began life as a large piece of driftwood found on Cleethorpes beach between the Brighton Slip and the Leisure Centre. The timber was exceptionally heavy and, after being alerted to its location by friends, Sean dragged, lifted and hauled it to the seawall before a passing jogger stopped to help him carry it to his van. The jogger later turned out to be the son of a good friend, adding an unexpected chapter to the story of the piece.

From the moment he found it, Sean could see the shape of a lamp within the wood. The process began with drying, cleaning, sanding and wire brushing, while carefully studying the natural contours and grain of the timber to determine its final form.

As the piece developed, Sean attended a music festival near Caistor, Lincolnshire, where he spent much of his time watching performers on the acoustic stage. He noticed the practical challenges musicians faced throughout the day – lighting issues, nowhere to hang coats, no bottle opener for drinks, and even a singer struggling to find somewhere safe to place a wine bottle.

Watching these small everyday problems unfold, Sean began to visualise the lamp on the stage in his mind. What had started as a simple lamp evolved into something more functional; a multi purpose piece designed to meet the needs he had observed.

Returning home, he incorporated these practical elements into the final work.

The Note is a piece born from observation, problem solving and imagination, transforming a discarded piece of driftwood into a functional work of art with its own story to tell.
