Skateboard Deck – Northbound

In Highway Code, Sean takes inspiration from the nautical flag system, where simple squares and colours represent letters of the alphabet. Fascinated by the randomness of this visual language, he began creating his own coded system during a journey to Derbyshire, sketching ideas inspired by motorway signage and the bold graphics found on HGVs.

At first glance, the works appear to be playful arrangements of shape and colour. In reality, each composition conceals a series of carefully chosen four letter words, translated into a secret code that remains known only to the artist.

The hidden words range from the beautiful to the downright obscene, but that’s precisely the point.

Deprived of context, the viewer is free to respond instinctively to the rhythm, balance and colour within each piece, proving that meaning can exist both in what is seen and what remains concealed.
