Baywash

Thornwick Bay, East Yorkshire

Photographic Print (One-Off)

102 x 75 cm ( framed )

Baywash captures the quiet, elemental rhythm of the North Sea at high tide, where water and stone meet in a continuous act of erosion and renewal. Taken at Thornwick Bay on the East Yorkshire coast, the work focuses on a single dark boulder as it emerges and disappears beneath the tide, anchored, yet constantly reshaped by movement.

Presented as a triptych, the sequence draws the viewer into a meditative flow. Each frame offers a slightly shifting moment: the sea softens into a mist-like veil through long exposure, blurring motion into something almost dreamlike. The solidity of the rock contrasts with the fluidity surrounding it, creating a tension between permanence and impermanence.

The cool, muted palette enhances the sense of calm and introspection, while the repetition of form invites a slower way of looking less about a single instant, more about the passage of time itself. There is a quiet power here, not dramatic but deeply felt, echoing the steady persistence of the sea.

As a one off piece, Baywash holds a singular presence both minimal and immersive, bringing a sense of stillness, depth, and coastal atmosphere into the space it inhabits.
