In Discernment, Trickett returns to the sacred heart motif, imbuing it with a heightened sense of clarity and symbolic focus. A deep red heart glossy and richly saturated forms the centre of the composition, its surface interrupted by a single, watchful eye. This central detail transforms the work into an emblem of perception and judgement, suggesting an inner capacity to see beyond surface appearances.

Encased within a textured, gold edged border and surmounted by a stylised flame, the sculpture draws on devotional aesthetics while shifting their meaning toward the psychological and intuitive. The contrast between the warmth of the red enamel and the aged gold detailing reinforces a tension between emotion and insight, instinct and awareness.

Intimate in scale and hand finished, Discernment invites close engagement. It positions the heart not only as a symbol of feeling, but as a site of knowledge proposing discernment as an embodied, deeply personal act of seeing and understanding.
